More than 30 percent of Cambodia’s population lives below the poverty line. This percentage is even higher for Cambodians living in rural areas, who are usually subsistence farmers who are relying entirely on agriculture to survive from one day to the next. Oxfam is involved in a number of different projects in Cambodia that range from agriculture, education, health services, disaster relief projects and gender issues.
Oxfam Japan is involved in a project, which focuses on poverty in the mountain villages in Cambodia. One of the main problems in these mountain villages is that most farmers are not able to grow enough rice to sustain their families throughout the year. The aim of the project is to make sure that the people in these villages can provide themselves with enough food in order for them to lead a healthy lifestyle. The project does this by setting up village economic development projects.
